Contrary to popular belief, the black fox isn’t a unique species of fox but is instead a genetic variation of the common red fox. Black foxes can look different from one another, as they can be completely black, have only shades of black, or simply be gray with black tipped fur.
Interestingly, black foxes are much more common throughout North America than they are Europe. This is because, during the 1800’s, there was a boom in fur trading throughout Europe. Black foxes were specifically hunted for their beautiful and uncommon pelts, and as a result, their population numbers sharply declined. Thankfully, black foxes aren’t hunted nearly as often in the present day.
