Description:
Named for the white undersides of their tails, cottontail rabbits are members of the Sylvilagus genus and can be found all throughout North America, Central America, and South America. Cottontail rabbit infants generally have light tan coats that turn darker as they mature.
Oddly enough, cottontail rabbit numbers actually increased with the European settlement of North America. More specifically, the introduction of domestic farming and abundant food sources caused an explosion in cottontail numbers throughout the continent. As you can guess, they are currently classified as an animal of least concern by the IUCN, and their numbers are not declining.
